Bacardi launches hydrogen-fuelled glass bottles

Utilizing hydrogen as the primary energy source is one of the milestones for many countries around the world, which still seems to be unachievable in the near future. However, the famous spirit company Bacardi makes that milestone much closer.

What?

Bacardi has launched a “world’s first” production of a hydrogen energy-fuelled glass spirits bottle. Yes, in collaboration with the glass manufacturer Steklarna Hrastnik d.o.o. Bacardi claims that their glass furnace is now conducted by utilizing hydrogen as the primary energy source.

How?

During this trial project, Steklarna produced 150,000 700 ml. glass bottles of Bacardy’s St-Germain elderflower liqueur. During production, the hydrogen was contributing over 60% of the furnace’s fuel. Where the liqueur in these bottles will be sold remains unknown, but it will soon be available in stores, bars, and restaurants.

Why it’s important?

Even if hydrogen contributes only 60% of the fuel, the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions already drops by 30% if compared to traditional glass bottle production. It is a great step forward towards more sustainable production of glass.
