Canned wine is not a preferable choice for customers

What?

The new study by the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for the Wolf Blass Foundation brings new evidence on preferred wine packaging for consumers. The study was conducted in Australia with 1200 participants. Consumers were asked what their preferred choices for wine packaging are.

What are the results?

The best type of wine packaging remains glass bottles. Below glass, most consumers prefer cask wine, while in the third place are flat plastic wine bottles. Finally, the least preferred wine packaging type remains aluminum cans. The main reason for such a low preference rate for drinkers is that such packaging is “closely tied to specific occasions, such as drinking outdoors”.

What is the problem with such results?

The problem is that conventional glass wine bottles are the largest source of carbon emissions for the wine manufacturing industry. Yes, the manufacture of a single bottle generates approximately 1.25kg of carbon dioxide. Whereas the least preferred options actually deliver the best results in terms of sustainability.

“There are some underlying prejudices in relation to alternative wine packages as they are seen as the cheaper, low-quality option when compared to glass bottles, which come with a sense of heritage and luxury” – says Lead researcher Jakob Mesidis.

Why it’s important?

In the modern world, each packaging sector aims to become as sustainable as possible. Hence, wine packaging will also experience changes towards decarbonization. Boost2Be keeps an eye on the most relevant news for our clients to help them adapt to the market.
