What?

Australian yogurt manufacturer Moo Premium Foods (Moo) has been found guilty of misleading their clients. The company was claiming they are using “100 percent ocean plastic” for packaging. Such a slogan Moo was using on its packaging, and in marketing through its official social media pages and website.

Who?

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) investigated the statements of Moo and discovered that they violated the Australian Consumer Law known as greenwashing. This law prohibits false or misleading representations of the products on the Australian market.

Was it a completely false statement?

No, the company does use plastic waste for yogurt packaging manufacturing. However, it was collected from coastal areas in Malaysia, but not directly from the ocean.

ACCC claims that all businesses must ensure their environmental claims are accurate and truthful. It includes taking responsibility to verify all the information provided to businesses by suppliers.

“Making false statements about a product’s environmental or sustainability qualities can mislead consumers, as well as putting the businesses making genuine claims at a competitive disadvantage,” – says ACCC commissioner Liza Carver.

How did the company react?

Moo Premium Foods has admitted their “100 percent ocean plastic” claim was misleading. Hence, they have corrected it on the packaging and published corrective notices on its website and social media platforms.

Moreover, yogurt producers will conduct audits of the resin used in their packaging.
